Tohoku International School

Tohoku International School provides a comprehensive academic program from pre-kindergarten though grade 12 for foreign and Japanese families who seek a quality, challenging education in English for their children. Our staff is a highly-qualified team of international, credentialled and experienced educators who are dedicated to the success of each student.

Tohoku International School has been serving the educational needs of the Sendai community for almost fifty years. Our school has a rich history, from our early days as a school for the children of Christian missionary families; we have transformed both in name and student diversity, from Sendai American School to Sendai Christian Academy and back to Sendai American School, and finally, to Tohoku International School in 1997 to more accurately reflect our international composition and mission.

Tohoku International School is founded upon an American-based educational curriculum and enriched by international education practices brought to the school by its diverse teaching staff. Our language of instruction is English.

In addition to the rigorous and differentiated academic programs we offer, TIS strives to develop the  whole child.    We challenge and guide all our students toward the achievement of our high ideals and culmination of learning, to seek and attain all of our five guiding stars. These five guiding ideals are integrated into the curriculum and practiced throughout the school.

The school year extends from the end of August to mid-June and is divided into four grading periods. Quarterly report cards, portfolios, and scheduled parent-teacher conferences are several methods used to report student progress.  We welcome and encourage parent communication with the faculty and administration.
