The Singapore American School provides an American style education to some 2,950 students from 40 nations. The school is a non-profit Trust and is governed by a 12-member Board of Directors elected from the Trust. High School Graduates receive the standard American High School Diploma.
Languages offered are French, Spanish Japanese and Mandarin. Specialists are available in reading, resource, speech/hearing, counsellor, and learning disabilities. Special programs include ESL, AP, independent study and remedial.
Teachers must have a BA with two years of classroom experience in US/international schools, and must be certified in their speciality. Overseas experience is preferred. The average length of stay for overseas personnel is five to six years. About 75% of the students are US citizens and the balance comprises 41 different nationalities. The average length of stay is three to four years.
Singapore American School's calendar begins in mid-August and ends in early to mid-June. Special curricular activities include art, chorus, band, PE, computer, business and applied technology. Extra-curricular opportunities include drama, excursions/expeditions, field trips, soccer, basketball, softball, volleyball, badminton, tennis, rugby, cross country, track and field and swimming. The school is located on a 36-acre campus approximately 30 minutes' drive from downtown Singapore. New state-of-the-art facilities house four separate divisions including early childhood, intermediate elementary, middle and high schools. Each division has its own classrooms, library (average 15,000 volumes), office and support facilities which include four air-conditioned gymnasiums, two outdoor covered play areas, two swimming pools, three cafeterias, six tennis courts, 1,000-seat stadium, track and field, baseball, softball, soccer and rugby fields. Middle and high school facilities include modern science laboratories, computer facilities, a language lab, drafting, home economics, business and applied technology classrooms. The campus also includes a variety of performing arts facilities including an 800-seat auditorium, 300-seat drama theatre, 700-seat elementary theatre and dedicated classroom spaces for music, art and drama. All facilities are fully air-conditioned.
Although Singapore American School was founded to serve the citizens of the United States residing in Singapore, it welcomes all students provided that their command of English is adequate and that space is available.
